What you do

Jam Jar Match is a cozy connect-the-fruit puzzle. You drag a sticky jam line through matching strawberries, blueberries, lemon slices, mint leaves and raspberries, and the cleared fruit pops into the goal jars at the top of the board. Closing loops clears every fruit of one kind, and long chains leave wooden spoons and jam-jar bombs. Each of the 24 levels has its own jars to fill and a move limit, and later levels add gingham cloth to wash, honey drops to bring down to the bottom row and sugar cubes to crumble.

  • Touch, mouse and keyboard controls on phones, tablets and desktops.

How to play

  1. Press Play. The jars above the board show what to collect and how many; the red badge shows the moves you have.
  2. Press on a fruit and drag through 3 or more matching fruits that touch up, down, left or right (not diagonally). Drag back along the line to undo a link.
  3. Let go to clear the chain. Each chain uses one move, the fruit flies into its jar and new fruit falls in from the top.
  4. Link back into a fruit already in your line to close a loop: every fruit of that kind on the board clears.
  5. Chains of 6 or 7 leave a glowing spoon that clears its row or column; 8 or more leave a jam-jar bomb. Link a special into any chain to set it off.
  6. Later levels add gingham cloth (clear fruit on it to wash it away; dark gingham needs two washes), honey drops (clear the fruit under them until they reach the bottom row) and sugar cubes (clear fruit next to them; big lumps need two hits).
  7. Fill every jar before your moves run out to clear the level. Moves left become bonus points and decide the stars; run out first and you can try again.

Controls

  • Touch: press a fruit and slide your finger across matching neighbors, then lift to clear. Slide back to undo a link.
  • Mouse: hold the button on a fruit, drag across matching neighbors, then let go.
  • Keyboard: arrow keys or WASD move the cursor, Space or Enter starts a chain, arrows extend it (or step back), and Space or Enter again clears it. Escape cancels a chain or opens the level menu.
  • The menu button above the board restarts the level or opens the level list.
  • Shared toolbar: pause, restart, sound, help and fullscreen.

Tips worth knowing

  • Look for squares before long lines: a loop clears every fruit of one kind and often fills a whole jar.
  • Fill the hardest jar first. Fruit you do not need still helps when clearing it brings new fruit down.
  • Save a spoon or bomb for a gingham corner, a stuck honey drop or a row of sugar cubes.
  • Honey only moves when the fruit under it clears, so work on the column beneath each drop.
  • Every move left at the end is worth 150 points and counts toward three stars, so a quick finish beats a big score.

Accessibility

  • There is no timer: nothing moves until you play a chain, so every move can be planned at your own pace.
  • Every action works with touch, a mouse or the keyboard; the keyboard cursor shows which fruit is selected.
  • Fruit differ in shape as well as color, the jars show counts as numbers, and goals and results are announced to screen readers.
  • Reduced motion trims particles and turns off screen shake. Sound is never required.

Questions

Is Jam Jar Match a match-3 game?

It is a connect-the-fruit matching puzzle rather than a swap game. Instead of swapping two tiles, you drag one line through three or more matching fruits that touch, in the style of connect-the-dots puzzles, and close loops to clear every fruit of one kind.

How do stars work?

Clearing a level earns one star. Finishing with enough moves left earns two or three; the line under the jars shows how many moves you need to keep, and the results screen repeats it.

What if there are no chains left?

If no chain of three exists after a move, the fruit is shuffled until one does. You never get stuck on a board with no move.

What does the game save?

Levels cleared, stars and your best score on each level are saved in this browser on this device. A level in progress is not saved. The earlier version of Jam Jar Match did not save anything, so there was no older score to carry over.
