Cozy Puzzle
Book Nook Shuffle
A little library has become delightfully mixed up. Put every book home, four at a time, one room after another.
What you do
Fern, Sun, Berry and Moon books each have a shelf, and each round knob on the bookcase turns the four books around it together, so fixing one shelf can disturb another. The library has 36 short puzzles in four rooms, the Reading Nook, the Attic Stacks, the Children's Corner and the Rare Books Vault, and new ideas arrive one at a time: longer shelves, a fourth shelf, a clasped book that never moves, numbered picture books that must stand in order, Biscuit the cat napping on a knob, and heavy tomes that only turn counterclockwise. Every puzzle has a par found by checking every possible sequence of turns. There is no clock or turn limit, and ribbons, best turns and open puzzles are saved on this device, with a room map for replays.
How to play
- Tap a round knob to pick the four books around it. Tap it again to turn them clockwise, or use the ↺ and ↻ buttons.
- Put every book on the shelf that shows its symbol: Fern, Sun, Berry and, in taller bookcases, Moon. A finished shelf can still move.
- New ideas arrive one at a time. A clasped book never moves; the other three books in its square go around it. Numbered picture books must stand in order, 1 on the left.
- Biscuit the cat naps on a knob, which will not turn. A turn that moves a book under her wakes her, and she curls up on the knob you just turned. Heavy tomes (the brass ↺ badge) only turn counterclockwise.
- Par is the fewest turns possible. Finish at par for 3 ribbons, within three turns of par for 2, or in any number of turns for 1. A hint shows the next turn but caps that puzzle at 2 ribbons.
- Undo and Reset are free and take turns off your count. Solving a puzzle opens the next two, so you can skip one.
Controls
- Touch or mouse: tap a knob, then tap it again or use the turn buttons. Undo, Reset and Hint sit beside them.
- Keyboard: arrow keys pick a knob, E turns clockwise, Q turns counterclockwise, U undoes, R resets, H shows a hint and Escape opens the puzzle menu. Tab and Enter work on every button.
- Use the shared toolbar for pause, restart, sound, help and fullscreen.
Tips worth knowing
- Trace all four books before turning: name where each one will land, not just the book you want to move.
- One counterclockwise turn does the work of three clockwise turns. Compare both directions before you commit.
- Leaning books are on the wrong shelf; upright books are home. A finished shelf sometimes has to lend a book and take it back.
- Biscuit moves onto the knob you turn next to her, so park her on a knob you no longer need.
- Around a clasp only three books move, and one hops over the clasp. Heavy tomes force a left turn, so plan the squares they sit in early.
- Undo as much as you like: only the turns left on the board count toward par.
Accessibility
- Every knob and control is a labeled button that works with touch, mouse and keyboard; arrow keys move between knobs.
- Book symbols and volume numbers carry the same information as the colors, and misplaced books lean until they are home.
- Reduced motion removes the turn arcs, hops and room animations. Optional sounds use the shared mute control.
Questions
Does Book Nook Shuffle save my progress?
Yes. Your ribbons, best turns and open puzzles are saved in this browser on this device. A puzzle in progress starts over if you leave the page.
What does a hint cost?
A hint picks the next turn of a shortest solution from wherever you are. After a hint, that puzzle can earn at most two ribbons on this visit.
